Day Sixteen: Happy Mothering Sunday!

Monday, March 31, 2014

Today was Mother's Day here in the UK, or as the locals call it, Mothering Sunday.  We decided to just go with the ol "when in Rome" idea and celebrate today as well.  I actually prefered it because Mother's Day always falls on the Sunday before our Anniversary, and so it's nice to spread it all out, ya know?

Church was great, always so refreshing and fulfilling.  The boys sang with the Primary some beautiful Mother's Day songs and it was so wonderful.  I cherish those primary singing moments.  The primary here is small and so I could actually see the boys the whole time which was super nice.

We came home from church and Todd and the boys made me my favorite breakfast ever...crepes! They were delicious!

We took naps and the boys played and then Todd and the boys made Sunday dinner, which was more of my faves, BBQ ribs!  Then I was showered with lots of love, hugs, kisses, compliments, cards, and a spa gift certificate which was JUST what I wanted.  I felt totally spoiled.

It was a wonderful Mothering Sunday!  I am so grateful to be a mother.  Being a mom was what I always wanted to be when I grew up.  I know that sounds cliche, but it is true.  Being a mom is the hardest thing ever.  It is absolutely a 24 hour job, and I have earned every single one of the grey hairs that I dye every six weeks!  I have literally sacrificed all of my time, my body, and all of myself for my boys and by doing so I have found out the real meaning of love, found out who I really am, and got a little peek into eternity.  I hold dear every single day I have with my young boys knowing that soon enough they will be young men.  I hope that I am doing them justice, I know that they have been the three greatest gifts of my life.  They are my jewels.

Day Fifteen: "I pray you dispatch me quickly".

Sunday, March 30, 2014

Today was a great day.  The perfect mix of relaxing, productive, and fun.  We got a lot done this morning with making plans for upcoming trips around the UK and other countries in Europe.  I got to take a nice long afternoon nap while Todd took the boys to run some errands, and then we all headed off to see the Tower of London!

We got to the Tower a little on the late side and missed doing a tour from one of the beefeaters.  We will most definitely go back for that.  I was bummed we missed it.  You really could spend the good part of a day at just the Tower of London.  There is a lot to see and do!

The boys loved the Tower of London.  I mean really LOVED it.  Like, I was a little worried about how interested they were in all the gory stuff.  They were glued with attention from the moment we told them a little bit of the history behind it.  Nice.  I have always been fascinated with British Literature and history, so I know enough about the Tower of London to know that it wasn't the funnest place in the world, obviously.  One of my absolute favorite parts about visiting was every so often there were these little signs that basically said, "we know you have heard a lot about the gruesomeness and the torture and the beheadings and all the horrible stuff that happened here, but that was just a very, very small part of it's history, really it's all fun and dandy and wonderful roses!!  Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"...in so many words.  Oh, you Brits!  I cannot tell you how funny I thought this was and really couldn't stop laughing!  Just own it!  So you have a bad part of your history... so what, learn from it and move on. It was so funny!

While visiting today I learned the story of Lady Jane Grey.  They had this little info plaque about her and honestly her story is just so sad and tragic.  If you haven't read about her, you really should. Interesting and sad stuff.  They have her picture with her words above, "I pray you dispatch of me quickly".  She said that just before she got the axe, literally.  Boy, she was polite.  I would have had a few choice words, if that was me, and believe me, they wouldn't be so polite or lady like, and I doubt they would make a plaque of them!

Todd and the boys in front of one of the outer walls to the Tower.
Todd looks like Mavrick here..."I went to the DANGER ZONE!"

I love the mixture of old and new here in London.

Union Jack on the white tower...

Some kind of catapult thing...

Byward tower...look at that date, so fun.

This is freaky...a fake hand through a see through brick.  The boys loved this.

In front of the white tower...

This is inside what they call the "blood tower" and I'll give you one guess why it's called that.  This is where all the torturing took place and prisoners were held.  It is spooky.

Some crazy torture device.

Going late in the afternoon was so pretty with great light and made it so fun for walking around and exploring...

The side stairs were built this way so that if people were coming to take over the tower, the stairs could be knocked down and you couldn't reach the door.  Pretty cool, and smart.

Even Tate was liking exploring!

Again, the modern with the old...love it.

Just the boys running and playing in front of an old castle, no big deal.

The Crown Jewels were so awesome. I loved every second. You weren't allowed to take pictures inside, which is SO like Elizabeth 2 to hog everything to herself! I loved seeing all the crowns from various queens and kings, especially Queen Victoria's, she's my favorite.
The jewels are unbelievable. The pageantry and tradition of the royal family and parliament is so interesting.

All of us in front of Tower Bridge...

A fancy cannon, a tower trash can (oops I mean rubbish bin) and a bench...

Todd and Taters and a popcorn tree that looks like it's growing out of Todd's head.

This was the gate that would open to let the prisoners, who would often travel by boat, into the Tower. Interesting fact is that Anne Boleyn started her procession to her coronation from the Tower of London, and then just a few years later she came back to the Tower as a prisoner and her life was ended here. Ironic.  And sad.  Poor Anne Boleyn.  Boy I am sure grateful I live in the 21st century!

After we were through with touring, we headed to the gift shop and goofed around there for awhile.

Sir Tate...

Tagg the destroyer...

Tower Bridge...can't help but here Bob Costas voice when I see it, since it was always in the opening shot of the London Olympics.  I wonder where they put the Olympic Rings?

Todd, Thatch and Tagg by Tower Bridge.
Lots of T's in that sentence.

We turned the corner to find somewhere to go eat dinner and we ran smack dab into our new favorite place, Wagamamas!  Tate was very happy, and hungry!

Thatcher is our little artist, he drew this picture while waiting for his dinner.

These two brothers were being so cute with each other, I had to capture it...love these boys!

And the two oldest boys just before our walk home in front of the bridge all lit up.

We got home late and everyone was tired, but as Todd and I were getting ready for bed we commented on what a good Saturday we had!

Day Fourteen: "On the rooftops of London coo, what a sight!"

Saturday, March 29, 2014

After walking Thatcher to school this morning and waiting on the playground for the bell to ring I looked up and saw this...

Through the hustle of trying to get out the door and to the school on time, the above scene just made me stop and smile.  I mean, I think I saw this scene a million and a half times as a child watching Mary Poppins.  Can you not in your minds eye see Burt and his friends chim chim cher-ee-ing up on those rooftops?  It's still so, so cool to be here.

It was freezing this morning so I bundled Tate up in his fuzzy turtle bunting.  He was not amused.

And he didn't want to wait for Thatcher to go into school, he wanted out of his stroller...

And Tagg got to play on the playground equipment while we waited.  Poor kid is totally bored out of his gord being home all day without going to school.

I heard from the nice lady at Thatcher's school today that Tagg's school might not allow him to start until after the new term, which is April 28th.  When I heard this I about died and she absolutely agreed with me that Tagg should be in school now, before the break.  So she told me to "go home and have a stiff drink and call them up and give them a piece of my mind with a gruff American attitude!"  I laughed pretty hard at that one. But yeah, I'm going to have to settle this situation.  American no nonsense style I suppose.

I was lucky enough to find a nice girl in the single adult ward through a referral to do some babysitting for us.  So tonight she came over and met the boys, and then stayed to babysit.  She is darling and very British and I could listen to her talk all day long.  Todd and I hurried out for our first date night in London!  I was ready for one.  We decided to go on a river cruise on the Thames.  I had never been on one of these dinner cruises, so I was excited to see what all the hubbub was about.

We took the tube down to the embankment tube stop and quickly found the entrance to the Bateaux river cruises.

It was really fun to be out alone experiencing new things in London just the two of us.

Here we are...ahhhhh young love.  Okay not young anymore...just love, I guess.

Okay this is funny...we saw this building going down to the dock, and it is hard to see in this picture below, but those are American flags waving in the wind.  We were like, "Wow cool!  Is that the US embassy?!"  We were totally convinced it was!  So we googled it and...nope, that's the Savoy.  You know the hotel Hugh Grant high tails it to, to tell Julia Roberts that he loves her in Notting Hill?  Yeah that's the one.  I guess they love America and are just every so patriotic there!  Still don't get the American flags.  But it was still nice to see old glory waving to us!

The view from the little waiting area before we got on the boat.

The boat that left just before ours...with The Eye in the background.

Getting on our boat.  The sides and the top were all glass, so it was really easy to see all the sights.

Sneaking a shot of this handsome guy...

Once we were seated at our table we looked to our right and this old friend was there.  We haven't been on The Eye yet, but I am anxious to.  This is one of those iconic things about London that when I see it, I still can't believe we are really here!

Once we all got settled and ordered dinner the boat started and soon we saw Big Ben...again, seeing it will never get old!  This was the first time seeing BB all lit up at night.

There is something so magical about seeing European cities at night.  I remember seeing Rome for the first time at night, all lit up.  It is the same with London...It's so beautiful!

Our starter.  I had a grand plan to take pictures of every course, but this is the only one I remembered to take!  Which really is a good thing I guess, because I got so caught up in the moment of it all photos of food fell off my priority list!

Todd enjoying a beverage.  This is something that you have to relish every drop of here in London.  My number one complaint!!  I need a big drink people, with ice!  Oh, how I miss it.

The boat turned around and we saw Big Ben again.  There was live music on board and this fancy girl was singing "Moon River" while we passed Big Ben.  I may or may not have gotten a little misty, I'm not going to lie.  I love that song, me and Holly Golightly, and just the whole moment of it all was really magical.  I'm so cheesy like that.

Our good ol' friend the Embassy, er I mean the Savoy, again...

St. Pauls Cathedral.  So majestic.

"Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's, the little old bird woman comes..."
I'm not ashamed to say I sang that while passing...how could you not?!

Tower Bridge which is SO COOL to see in person.

Going under Tower Bridge...

The tower of London...poor Anne Boleyn.

 Canary Wharf, the financial district.
During this part of the cruise a whole bunch of business-y looking men, who we assumed were in the finance world went outside and started shooting pictures.  It was so, so odd.

It was such a fun evening and I was totally caught up in all the sights of London at night.  It was so fun and romantic, I would absolutely recommend a dinner cruise to anyone visiting London.  We had a lot of fun.  But not as much fun I don't think, as the couple sitting at the table next to us who no lie, ordered several drinks of hard liquor and also 2 bottles of champagne.  They started off the night very stiff upper lip British and by the end of the evening they were laughing away and swaying and singing along to the music.  It was the best dinner entertainment!

We decided on the tube ride home that tomorrow we will take the boys to see the Tower of London, because who doesn't want to hear tales of torture and incivility mixed with seeing a bunch of royal jewels?
