Today was Stake Conference. It was held in our building. Couldn't help but think how small it was compared to our massive Stake Conferences back in Frisco. It was refreshing though. There are perks to the huge, and there are perks to the small numbers of members as well.
I couldn't help but think of this cute little quote during a lot of the conference talks...
This seemed to be one of the themes of the day, and something that I have been really thinking about lately. As we have moved here and downsized quite a bit, and also got rid of some of the distractions in our lives, I have noticed a difference. We spend more quality time together. I get way more done during the evenings. Things like that. There are so many things in our lives that are nice, but really unnecessary that distract us.
I have noticed that there are a lot of things that fill up my boys lives also that are nice, but ultimately unnecessary. This has been on my mind a lot lately as I as their mother choose their activities and how many activities or sports they are involved in. I guess the trick is really learning how to cypher through and decide what is best to spend time on. All I know is I am not going to feel guilty at all anymore if my boys aren't involved in every activity under the sun. I have a friend whose kids are growing and grown and she told me the other day that she wishes she held her kids closer to home more often, and just spent time together. Sports and lessons are great, but now that they are gone, they are gone, and as grown men none of them turned out to be professional sports players. My main goal as a mother is to prepare my boys to serve their missions and get them on those missions. I know statistically that if they serve, they will most likely be strong for life. I make every scripture study, FHE, and family dinner missionary training, as I take very seriously the idea that our homes are the new MTC's.
We had some friends over for dinner tonight and I made Cafe Rio pork. It wasn't too shabby, not as good as the real thing of course, but it hit the spot!
