We slept in again today, not without me waking up at 6:30am again. Dang you bodyclock!
After we enjoyed a nice breakfast at the hotel, we got ready for the day and headed out to see Saint Peter's Basilica. The whole piazza was INSANE. I think we picked the busiest time of year to see Saint Peter's. The line to the Vatican was crazyland. I mean complete chaos. I am so glad we decided not to mess with the Vatican this trip. I mean, you've seen one painted ceiling you've seen them all right?
Saint Peter's is another one of my favorite sights in Rome. So beautiful and amazing. We wandered around looking at all the cool details for a little while.
One of my favorite instagram pics of us...
The piazza looking at the basilica.
This looks like a scene straight up out of Ghostbusters! Looks so eery! But it wasn't really, the clouds were just being fickle right then.
That symbol with the two keys is the symbol for the Pope.
We missed seeing him today, but he sure is popular around these parts right now. There are bobbleheads and pictures of him everywhere.
Saint Peter's selfie time!
Amazing. Have to see it in person to appreciate the majesty of it all...
Todd loved the whole idea that you can drink Rome's water anywhere you go, here he is taking full advantage of it.
After we roamed around Saint Peter's Square for enough time, we walked over to Castel Sant'Angelo. This castle was made famous in one of the Dan Brown books, and Todd really wanted to take a peek at it while we were here.
We saw these crazy guys while walking up to the castle...
The scenery is breathtaking...look how pretty this bridge is over the fiume tevere.
This is the Ponte Sant'Angelo, or St.Angelo Bridge. So gorgeous. It is lined with Angel statues and leads up to the Castle.
Uhhhh...weird.
While waiting in line to get into the castle I shot these next pictures.
The wait to get into the castle was just a few minutes. It is SO worth going to. It was really cool and so interesting. The castle was actually built to be a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian and his family. It was later taken over by the Popes and used as a fortress. There is a secret passage from the castle to the Vatican. Pretty cool stuff.
You keep walking up in the castle and then you come to the roof, and then you see this...
Going here is super cool, but the view alone is worth the trip. Todd and I stood up on the roof for a while just admiring all of beautiful Rome around us.
Oh hello mister seagull...
It was cool to see the sworded Angel up close and personal as well...
After we finished admiring the views, we left the castle and headed over to a Spa for a little r&r. It was our anniversary celebration after all and so I booked us an afternoon relaxing in a Spa and a couples massage.
We had this whole Spa area to ourselves and it was heavenly!
After our massages we were so relaxed and honestly ready to just go back to the hotel and go to bed, even if it was only 7:00pm! But we couldn't skip dinner! Especially since we skipped lunch! You can't skip meals in Italy! Blasphemy!
We headed over to a restaurant that was recommended to us by our tour guide last night, Maccheroni.
Here is Todd ready to eat. He always looks grumpy in pictures I take of him. Ha!
Ummmm, it doesn't get better than real Italian bread. You cannot watch your carbs while you are in Italy. It is against the rules.
Dinner was delicious. I got Amatriciana because it is my all time favorite. Todd got Arrabiata because that is his fave. We stuffed ourselves silly, and then because we weren't glutinous enough we got a gelato on the way over to piazza navona. Again, that's the rules.
We wandered around piazza navona for a little while and watched some of the painters and street performers and then we decided to call it a day and head back to the hotel.
It was another great day, soo fun and relaxing and wonderful. Couldn't imagine a more perfect time. I miss the boys, but we have been texting my Dad and keeping up on how they are doing, and they are doing great. Can't wait to have another day here in Rome tomorrow.
