Day Thirty-Eight: "A picture is worth a thousand words."-- Napoleon Bonaparte

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Today we all slept in which was glorious and much needed after a few days of touring. We got up, packed up, and left our stuff with the hotel as we went out for our last day of seeing Paris.

Our first stop was Angelina's. I heard about this place from several people and was told I MUST try their macaroons.  Say no more, we were there!

Look at all the pretty pastries.  Seriously everything in Paris is just so dainty, and pretty.
I love it.

I loved this little shop with all it's pretty desserts and sweets. So so fun.  They also have a tea room where you can get breakfast and lunch. Would be so fun for a couples trip, or a girls only trip. But since I am surrounded by burly boys, I didn't think they would go for a fancy tea time lunch.

Famous macaroons...

Pretty, pretty!

We had so much fun picking out a box of macaroons.  They have all different flavors and the boys got to pick a few and Todd and I picked our faves. Fun memory.

Tada! Finished pretty product.  I love pretty wrapped boxes!

After we went to Angelina's we stopped and grabbed some brunch.  I ordered my favorite french food, monsieur croquette and onion soup.  Delicious.

The serve "french mustard" with their salt and pepper...
you can also see Todd's sandwich in the background.

Thatcher ordered an omelet every single day we have been here...he is one funny kiddo.

After we ate, we took a walk through the tuileries gardens and then over to the war museum and Napoleon's Tomb.

Here is the outside of the war museum, we just wandered around for a minute...

This is a church connected to Napoleon's Tomb...

Outside the church that houses Napoleon, beautiful building.
Brotherly hugging.

Looking up at the cupola.  I only know what that is called in Italian, what is it?  Dome?

And here is is, Napoleon is inside that red thing, within like 6 more caskets.
Pretty crazy...

The boys thought this was pretty cool, Thatcher wanted to make sure and have his picture taken by Napoleon.  Kinda freaky when you think about it.

After we saw the tomb, we took a taxi over to see the pantheon.  When we got there the dome or cupola or whatever you call it was under construction which was a bummer because Todd and the boys really wanted to see the Foucault pendulum, but since the Pantheon is under construction, it is being stored away somewhere.

Such a cool church though, with lots of great history...

And here we are, me and the boys...love these pics so much, they always remind me how cool it is that we get to show our kids this stuff.

After taking a peek inside the pantheon we hurried across the street to the Luxembourg gardens. They were gorgeous.

Here is what we saw when we first came in...

The green and the flowers and the scenery is so amazing.

They have this cute little pond in the middle where you can rent boats to float across.

Here are the boys with their boats, they were so excited to do this.
You can see Luxembourg Palace in the background.

Tagg's is off!

You can direct the boats and push it with these sticks.

Thatcher's turn!

It was seriously a highlight of our trip, this little moment with the boats. The boys loved it.

While the boys played with the boats, Tate wanted out to see the fun for himself.  After a bit he discovered the sand stuff on the ground and made a huge mess and I let him because I am that kind of Mom now...

While the boys played I snapped a few pics of the amazing, breathtaking scenery.
Loved it so much.

Selfie!

After playing at Luxembourg gardens for WAY too long we rushed back to our hotel to pick up our things so we could head to the train station.

We hurried grabbed a taxi to the train station and when we got there we were behind schedule a little bit. We rushed through customs and the passport control place, and thought we made it just in time, but we didn't!  The train seriously left 10 minutes early!!  It was CRAZY.  A whole bunch of tourists that were supposed to be on that train had also missed it and so we waited around for the Eurostar people to fix this gigantic problem.

Luckily, we got bumped to the very next train and actually upgraded to first class, which was cool, so we were living the high life! But honestly, Todd and I were suuuuper stressed when we missed that train.

Here is Tate living it up Eurostar style!

Thatcher playing with Euro and eating his pizza.  These boys are so funny about the different money.  When we got on the train Thatcher asked us if he could have the rest of our Euro since we would just be "throwing it away now that we didn't need it".
We got a good laugh out of that one.

Tate enjoying a good snack on the train...

Playing the french card game the boys got from the Easter bunny/chicken on the way home.

We got home, and it was funny to us how homey London and our little flat felt.  Doesn't take long to acclimate to new life.  We had a BLAST in Paris, and we are so glad we took advantage of the long weekend and went over.

Day Thirty-Four: "Paris is always a good idea."

Friday, April 18, 2014

Today we woke up bright and early and I thought it was Saturday.  You know that feeling first thing in the morning when you try to orient yourself and you say, wait, what day is it?  What do I have going on today? And on Mondays you want to cry, and on Fridays you want to burst into tears of joy?  I was in that place.  I knew something was up, and then I remembered, we were going to Paris today! Woohoo! Our first European trip with the kids!

We packed and got everything ready.  Todd was still working in the morning from home, so he told me he had to be on a conference call on the way to the train station. We called a car service that had a car that could fit us all and all our stuff, and left our flat at about 11:30 to catch our 12:35 Eurostar train to Paris. Todd got on his conference call and so I was trying to quiet the boys down in the car.  As soon as we got to the St. Pancras train station, utter chaos ensued. It was to put it lightly, a mad house.  There were people EVERYWHERE, sitting on their suitcases, on their mobiles (yes I've reverted back to saying mobile), and running here and there.  I looked at Todd like, is this normal? He was talking very seriously to the person on the other end of the phone so I knew he couldn't really focus and it was all up to me baby!

So somehow we got our three boys, us, 5 suitcases, a pack n play, 3 backpacks, and a toddler carry backpack into the train station. We go inside and find that it is even more of a crazyland and I am like, what. the. heeeeck?  We had heard it was so delightful to take the Eurostar to Paris, and by the looks around us, this wasn't easy or delightful! We didn't even know where to walk or go because of all the people.

A little sampling of what was going on around us...I love that I caught that girl mid bite!  Yes!

So finally we hear an announcement on the loud speaker that says, "sorry about the inconvenience, all the trains to Paris are way behind schedule, there has been an incident on the tracks."  I look at Todd like, "oh no what are we going to do?!" And he still can't talk to me or help me do anything cause he is on a bloody conference call!

So I find a Eurostar employee and ask her what happened, and how long the delay is.  She tells me that somebody jumped on the track in France and it has delayed the trains by at least 2-3 hours. I was like, okaaaaay.  How do we know when our train is going to leave?  And she told me that she didn't know. Nice.

So right there and then with Todd on the conference call, the boys whining and asking what was going on, Tate starting to get fussy because he was getting tired, I made an executive decision.  I grabbed the boys, and all our stuff and we went outside and literally shoved all our stuff plus our family of five into a small black Taxi.  The Taxi driver thought I was crazy.  And I kinda was.  I was done.  I was not going to wait around this ridiculousness for 2-3 plus hours.  Todd had no clue what was going on as he was engrossed in his call, but he was going along for the ride and helping to carry bags. It was pure insanity.

When we got home we unloaded and went inside.  First thing I did was put Tate down for a nap.  Then I canceled our dinner reservations that night in Paris.  Then Todd got off his phone call.  After talking about what was up he called Eurostar and they were still clueless as ever (how do these people run a successful business?!) And told us we could either head back to the station in 2-3 hours to try our luck, or we can change our tickets for another day.  Since we couldn't change our tickets since we have all our travel meticulously planned out, we opted to stay home for a few hours and then head back later.

All I have to say is I am SO glad we didn't wait around!  Tate got a good nap, Todd and I caught up on some American TV, the boys played nicely in their room.  After a few hours we once again loaded everything back into a taxi, and headed back to the station.  When we arrived we saw this...

Ayyyy!  So after a few minutes what we gathered from serious lack of information is that it was basically first come first serve to get on a train.  No rhyme, reason, nothing.  Thanks for that Eurostar! So we got in "line" and were waiting. We coincidentally were in back of three cute ladies from Texas. We bonded over the craziness of it all. Then by some random grace we were through and had seat assignments and were off!  We were supposed to leave at 12:35 and we left at 4:45.  All in all stressful, but at least we were onboard the train!

 Todd and the boys onboard...

Tate was OVER all this nonsense...

See what I mean?  He wouldn't even take a decent selfie with me! Grump!

The train ride was short and very cool as we went through the "chunnel" which was kinda freaky, but mostly awesome. After we got to Paris, we disembarked, or whatever you call getting off a train and looked around and said, "Holy Cow we are in Paris!"  It was cool.

Then we went outside and waited forever for a taxi big enough for our crew and the first thing I noticed besides how surreal and cool it was to be in Paris, was that everyone and their little dog smoked like chimneys.  Holy Hannah!  I guess France hasn't been welcomed into the 21 century and still don't know that smoking kills you.  Ayyyyy!  I was literally gasping for air.  I felt bad for the kids.

After getting in the taxi we drove to our hotel and look at what we passed on the way (!!) ...

And this is about when the lyrics to 'Lady Marmalade' got stuck in my head...and also Nicole Kidman singing, "The french are glad to die for love...".  I know too many movie references.  It was cool to see in person, but sad that my boys were exposed to the street that it was on!  Yikes, BIKES!  Tagg was like, "uh mom, why is the word 'sex' written so much?'  Nice one.

We got to our hotel around 9:00 and we were very happy with it!  We just got it on booking.com and we were happy to see it was nice, and clean, and spacious (for europe!)  It was a really cute little boutique hotel in the 17th arrondissement, super close to the Arch de Triumph.

Our hotel...L'edmund.

When we got out of the cab and I looked across the street and saw this picture below I thought, "Paris is always a good idea", you know, from Sabrina.  I live my life through songs and movies. #sorrynotsorry

We got in and settled and Todd went out to get us some food since we hadn't had anything but snacks. 1.5 hours later, (!!!!), seriously, he returned.  I may or may not have thought he had been kidnapped by sex slave ring guys and I would have to call Liam Neeson to come rescue him.  No but seriously I was scared to death.  When he got home I was shaking I was so scared. He came in with McDonalds.  No joke.  Our first meal in Paris was Mickey D's.  Typical.  But we were starving so we didn't care.  Plus, can you get more french than french fries?!  I think not!
