Day One-Hundred and Twenty-Six: Summertime, and the livin' is easy....

Saturday, July 19, 2014

Today we hung around our flat cleaning and chillaxing (as the boys like to say) and then we headed out to Regents Park for a picnic and to feed the ducks.

We stopped by Pret on the way to get some lunch. The real name is Pret a Manger. It's a little sandwich shop that has really good healthy sandwiches, salads, soups, bread etc. I love it. It is convenient and healthy. The boys call it Pret and Manager. No matter how much I tell them it isn't "manager", they still call it that. Fine. I give in. I've got to pick my battles.

We had a little picnic on the grass and it was lovely, as they say here in the UK. It was also humid today. Humidity and I don't mix well, we just don't get along. But the park was so beautiful and it seemed like everyone was out enjoying themselves and the summer weather.

After our picnic we decided to take a little boat ride on the pond. We have been really wanting to try it out, so it seemed like the perfect day for it.

The boys getting their life vests on.

Even Tate had one...

Looking out over the pond. I love Willow trees...

The boat ride was so fun. The boys loved it. Well the big boys did. Tate was done after 2.2 seconds, but he hung in there.

It really was such a picture perfect day!

Oh hey there hot stuff! You going my way?

Blurry, but a cute one of this big kid.

Taters and me...

This park is full of ducks and geese that love people and food. It is really ideal for kids who love to feed ducks and geese, and also sometimes like to chase ducks and geese and try to touch/pet them. Which isn't ideal for parents, because that is gross.

After we got out of the boat, we went to feed the ducks and geese our leftovers from lunch.

This goose had a major tude, and Tate wasn't digging it. It freaked him out.
He was very entitled and kept thinking all the food was for him. I told Todd he must be a millennial goose.

My two very American boys with a very British background.

It was such a great Saturday. We have a lot of those here. There is just so much to see and do, and everything we see and do, I love. I have always wanted to come here to England, I love all things British, but I am so glad that I get to experience all of these fun things with my family. It is the best.

Day One-Hundred-Twelve to One-Hundred-Fifteen: Running in Regents Park.

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

Every Tuesday and Thursday Tate and I go for a run through Regents Park. Okay, Tate sits in his buggy and eats snacks and drinks juice, and I push the stroller while running. I love Regents Park, and I love living so close to it. There is this great little boating lake with TONS of ducks and geese. We often stop over and pause the run to watch the ducks and swans, and feed them. Tate loves it. "Quack, quack" he says now. But they get SO close it sometimes freaks him out, and truth be told, freaks me out a little too...don't want to have a duck attack!

Simply breathtaking. I never get tired of this amazing view.

After the run we stop off at the playground so Taters can have a little bit of play time and energy burn off. He digs the big kid slide...

So happy that I am actually letting him play on the big slide!!

I usually I spend most of the time keeping him from getting knocked out by a big kid on this slide, but it was pretty empty so I just let him climb until he lost interest.

Day Forty-Five: Back to School!

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Today began with the normal school day routine! Yeehaw! These last two weeks with the boys all home have really done a number on me. It's probably because we have much less space here than we do in Texas, the boys make a lot more noise here and there isn't a backyard to send them out to. Ay. I am going to have to think of more things to do for the kids when there are more breaks in school.

The boys got off to school and Tate and I went to the Tesco by our house and picked up a few groceries. We dropped off the groceries and then went for a long walk through Regents Park. I listened to conference while Tate napped, it was heavenly.

After coming home, getting ready, playing with Tate and cleaning up the flat, it was time to pick up the boys. They each had good first days back at school.  Thatcher still hasn't presented his WWII poster, and is anxious to do that. We went to the park for about an hour on the way home for the boys to get some energy out and then came home.

We had dinner, FHE, and now the kids are all bathed and in bed and it is all quite in the flat. Except for the traffic we hear outside our open windows. I thought I'd be used to it by now, but I am not.

Good day today, nice to be back into a routine.  I have so much to do tomorrow and Wednesday in preparation for leaving on Thursday.

Day Twenty-Four: The Trunchbull

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

So today started off like a normal day.  Got up, got the kids off to school, and went for my morning walk with Tate through Regents Park.  I really love exploring that park and finding new little places to wander.  It is so beautiful.  Spring in London is absolutely enchanting.  There is no other word to describe it.  I cannot even handle how beautiful it is.  It is straight up out of a movie, or fairytale land. It's gorgeous, simply put.  And I won't stop talking about it, even though I bet everyone is getting sick of hearing about it!

Today it was raining a little on our walk, but I really don't mind.  Tate is protected in his rain cover, or as the boys call it, his "force field", and just falls asleep and I wander around listening to conference.

Today I saw this on our walk and it made me happy...and a little freaked out.  Always a good combo!

After getting home Tate took a long nap after lunch, and I got a lot done around the house.  The day flew by and soon it was time to get the boys.

As soon as I entered Tagg's school play area I saw his face and I knew something was up.  His teacher, came straight over to me and said we needed to talk.  Perfect.  She explained that they had been having a rough time with Tagg adjusting to their rules, and that he was being far too "cheeky" for their standards.  I asked her to explain "cheeky" and she said back talking, talking rude, sassy, etc.  She said he questions what they are doing, and talks to her like a peer, and not his teacher.  She also said he had a run in with the "headteacher" today.

So I pretty much instantly through I knew what she was talking about.  Tagg has hardly any filters, it's true, and why I don't know, but he has never really had a problem talking to adults.  He will go up to anyone and just start talking to them, big kids, teenagers, adults, he really doesn't have any issues with it.  He never has.  Ever since he was a little, little boy and believe me it has been embarrassing at times. Over the years I have really tried to work with him on showing respect for adults, but this kid is just so dang confident, he has no issue with speaking his mind to whomever whenever!  Which is super embarrassing or frustrating at times, but also on the same hand, we really love this about Tagg and wouldn't change his confidence.  But yes, he can back talk and be sassy at times, which is wrong, and he needs to curb it!

I told her that I didn't agree with him being sassy or back talking, and I would absolutely work with him on that at home, and she could expect things to get better.  I gave Tagg THE look and he came over to me and then we went to pick up Thatcher.

Once we got home I told Tagg to tell me all that happened.  He told me that he had thrown a ball at PE after the PE teacher told them not to.  He also had told a kid to "shut up". Okay I thought, those things are not things he should do, obviously.  We talked about it, and what he could do to not say those things to friends, and also to mind and follow directions.

He then broke down crying and told me that he gets in trouble for calling his teacher Miss or Ma'am.  I was like, "ummmm....what?!"  They are supposed to call their teachers by their first names here.  Also, he proceeded to tell me that today as they were going out for recess the headmistress told all the kids who didn't have waterproof coats on to sit on a bench.  She then told them that they couldn't play outside until it stopped raining because they didn't have waterproof coats on.  Tagg then said, "but I didn't know!".  Tagg said she whipped around, and yelled to him, "How DARE YOU!  I have never been spoken SO RUDELY to in my life!  I am the HEAD TEACHER!  I deserve to be spoken to with RESPECT!".  Tagg said he then started to cry and sat out all of his recess crying.  While he was telling me this story he was sobbing, and told me that he feels like he can't even open his mouth at school because he is always getting corrected.  Honestly, and I am not kidding, mama bear came out BIG time. I. Was. TICKED.  I seriously had to calm myself down mentally before I did anything rash and so I could think straight.  After I was calm, I told Tagg that I didn't feel he did anything wrong by saying Miss or Ma'am, and also that I didn't feel it was wrong what he said to the headteacher.

I immediately called the school and asked to speak with Tagg's teacher.  We spoke for a little while and I gathered from her that you do NOT question your headmistress or headteacher here in the UK. Whatever.  I am sorry, but that is pretty dang poor that a school administrator would talk to a 7 year old child that way, and then be okay with seeing him cry the whole recess period.  I also explained to her that there is no way that my son should be getting in trouble for saying Miss or Ma'am, especially after she demanded such respect from him!  That is how he has been raised to show respect, and I am sorry, but I will not try to untrain him in saying those things.  We had a good chat and I think we are on the same page now.

I told Tagg that he had to cut the sass, work on his attitude, and really just grin and bear it for the next few months.  Don't stop saying Miss and Ma'am if he didn't want to.  I told him to just remember that they do things different here sometimes, and that's okay because we aren't here forever.  I also told him that if I got a good report from his teacher every day about his behavior we can go get ice cream every day after school. Yep. Ice cream every single day. I am that kind of mom.  Bribes work.

But seriously?!?  Oh boy, I am SO exhausted after dealing with all of this!  This headmistress thing is too crazy for me!  Now you know where the Trunchbull came from!  I miss you Ms. Solomon, Tagg's sweet and soft spoken and oh so lovely nice principal of Phillips!  After all this nonsense today, I am SO ready for bed.  Todd is out again for the night and so I am DON.  Dealing with this kinda stuff, especially when it deals with my kids, really takes it out of me.

Oh and by the way, I have oh so affectionately and officially named Tagg's headteacher, The Trunchbull.

Day Nineteen: “To walk three miles, or four miles, or five miles, or whatever it is, above her ankles in dirt, and alone, quite alone!"

Thursday, April 3, 2014

This morning after dropping the boys off at school I was so inspired by the beautiful spring day, and the scenery I decided to not go home right away and just keep on walking! Tate and I headed over to Regents Park, which is one of the Royal parks and very close to our home.  I felt like Lizzy or Marianne from an Austen novel just walking and walking and enjoying the sunshine and english scenery.

I'm sorry but does this not look right out of some period piece film?!

"Two road diverged..."  Okay so not British, but that's what I thought when I saw this.

The most beautiful trees and scenery!  I know I keep talking about it, but I can't get over it!  Maybe I have just been in Texas too long, but this place it gorgeous!

The swan princess...

I was listening to my iPhone and just walking around all over the park, taking it all in and enjoying myself.  Well then Tate started to get super annoyed with our little walk and started screaming and I started getting really, really tired.  I looked at my phone.  Holy Hannah!  I had been walking for a little over an hour and really had no idea where I was!  Somewhere in Regents Park, this I knew, but I had completely gotten lost in it!  Good thing it didn't start to rain and I then I might have fallen and sprained my ankle and then that good for nothing John Willoughby would have had to come along and rescue me, and we all know what came of that!

Thank heavens for google maps and it seriously took me 23 more minutes to get home.  I was exhausted by the time I walked in the door.  Tate was so ticked at me for interrupting his morning schedule, he protested by not taking a nap.  It was lovely!  But worth it because I fell in love with Regents Park.  I will be back for many walks, just not so long next time.

We finally had our internet guy come and he was in all in a huff that the hookups in our flat were so ancient I guess.  He fiddled around for a while with things, and then he came and found me and told me he had to go outside for "about a half hour".  I had lunch plans, and had to cancel them and so I just sat around the flat waiting for him to come back.  Three hours later, he finally came back.  For reals.  I seriously thought he had just left.  It was too crazy for words, but I didn't really care, because now we have internet and a phone!  Yippy!

Tonight while I was making dinner I left to see where Tate was.  I should have known.  As soon as the big boys come home he is right there with them shadowing them around.  They were playing computer and he was right by the desk just watching them and playing with his toys.  It is so darling.  I shot a few pics just in case anyone wanted to dispute this story.

Tonight I went to an RS activity at the church and it was so great to be with other women and have some grown up talk.  Now I think I am going to go watch the series finale of How I Met Your Mother because everyone is talking about it and I have to see what happens, and I need to catch up on Revenge because I miss it!  Thank you iTunes!
