Day One-Hundred and Seventy-One: Welcome to the BIG KIDS club Bidwi!

Friday, September 5, 2014

Happy, happy birthday to Todd! He is the BIG 3-2 today...and in true tradition that was started on his 20th birthday as a missionary, I was able to say to him, "welcome to the big kids club!" for the 12th time today! Whoa. We are getting old.

Todd requested "game food" for his birthday dinner since he will not be able to partake live in many of the BYU games this year because of the time difference. This is a great and terrible burden for him, since he bleeds blue and is the most loyal of loyal BYU fans, so I complied with his melancholy wishes and made him all his favorites, even though I wouldn't say it's the most well rounded or healthy of dinners. But you only turn 32 once, so I figured, what the hay!

Ham and Cheese Sliders, 7 layer bean dip, jalapeno popper dip = heart attack by age 32? Perhaps.

The birthday spoils!

Todd doesn't do cake, which to me is like 2nd to blasphemy, but it is his birthday so I made him this flan-ish/tart-ish thing that turned out delicious.

The birthday Bidwi!
I love this guy, he has my whole heart and he has not only shown me the whole world but given me my whole world in every way...

Anyone who knows Todd well knows the guy is a ridiculous reader. By ridiculous I mean he reads anything he can get his hands on and so incredibly fast it blows your mind. For his birthday he requested all the books in the "Wheel of Time" series. He was a happy camper.

Happy Birthday to the best husband, father, byu fan and person around!!

Day Seventeen: Just another manic Monday...

Tuesday, April 1, 2014

Who doesn't love Cyndi Lauper??  You know, I think of that song almost every Monday.  Thanks for nothing Cyndi Lauper!

We found out on Friday that Tagg and I needed to come in today for an "enrollment meeting" at Tagg's school.  I had no idea what an "enrollment meeting" was.  I guessed it was just to meet Tagg, go over some policies, etc.  So after I got Thatcher settled at his school, Tagg and I headed off to Robinsfield to have our meeting.

When we got there the kids were all going in for the start of school and Tagg and I sat and watched all the moms and dads kiss their kids goodbye and the kids run in with their backpacks, laughing and talking to all their friends.  Kids are the same no matter where you go in the world.  They are cheerful and full of energy.  Parents are the same throughout most of the world.  They take their kids to school and kiss them goodbye and tell them to be good, and worry about them and love them.  It was fun to sit and watch this and all the different cultures of people doing the same thing that we do with our kids every single day.  It makes the world seem a little bit of a smaller place seeing the commonality between us all.

We went in for our enrollment meeting and basically it was just to say that Tagg was in, and here is a packet of info and let's take him up to his class!  Even though we didn't know Tagg would be starting right then, he totally wanted to go, so he did!  A little anticlimactic, but it worked!  We went upstairs and the deputy headmistress (aka: vice principal) introduced him into his new class.  His teacher seems really sweet and the kids were all smiles and welcoming.  I left him there praying yet again that he has a good day, that he makes friends, and that he is happy.  If anyone could do it though, it's Tagg.  That kid was born raring, ready and confident.  He has little to no filters, and thinks that everyone and anyone is his friend. He is loud and friendly and has no problem talking to anyone, even adults.  So I usually don't worry too much about him in situations like this, but I did today.

I picked him up at 3:10 and I could see that he was as happy as can be.  First thing he said to me was that it is so nice to be back in school, and that he likes being the new kid because he gets lots of attention and gets all the friends. Nice.  Needless to say, he had a great first day.  I feel so blessed that both boys are adjusting so well, making new friends, and loving their new schools.  It is such a load off and a relief!

We picked up Thatcher and he was a bit grumpy because they went on a field trip today and he said it was "ultra boring".  So as a treat we stopped off at a gelato shop on the way home and the boys had their first gelatos but in London.  Tate wasn't really a fan.  I've noticed he doesn't really like chocolate. He must not be my son after all.  Looks like they might have gotten things mixed up at the ol' Texas fertility clinic.

Todd came home at 6:30 (which is still odd) and we had dinner that I made in the crock pot.  It is so strange having this traditional schedule after 4 years of not.  It is nice though.  After dinner he took Tate and gave him a bath and started his bedtime routine while I supervised the boys cleaning up dinner and started getting them ready for bed.  It is amazing what four hands and two parents can do!

Now I am blogging and cursing this internet.  We haven't had wifi or our internet set up in our flat yet. Neither a phone.  So, we've been using this lame hotspot thing that is SO spotty and unreliable and I want to throw my computer out the window half of the time using it.  We get our internet Wednesday. Thank goodness!  I think I'll go read a little bit and then off to bed...

Day Fourteen: "On the rooftops of London coo, what a sight!"

Saturday, March 29, 2014

After walking Thatcher to school this morning and waiting on the playground for the bell to ring I looked up and saw this...

Through the hustle of trying to get out the door and to the school on time, the above scene just made me stop and smile.  I mean, I think I saw this scene a million and a half times as a child watching Mary Poppins.  Can you not in your minds eye see Burt and his friends chim chim cher-ee-ing up on those rooftops?  It's still so, so cool to be here.

It was freezing this morning so I bundled Tate up in his fuzzy turtle bunting.  He was not amused.

And he didn't want to wait for Thatcher to go into school, he wanted out of his stroller...

And Tagg got to play on the playground equipment while we waited.  Poor kid is totally bored out of his gord being home all day without going to school.

I heard from the nice lady at Thatcher's school today that Tagg's school might not allow him to start until after the new term, which is April 28th.  When I heard this I about died and she absolutely agreed with me that Tagg should be in school now, before the break.  So she told me to "go home and have a stiff drink and call them up and give them a piece of my mind with a gruff American attitude!"  I laughed pretty hard at that one. But yeah, I'm going to have to settle this situation.  American no nonsense style I suppose.

I was lucky enough to find a nice girl in the single adult ward through a referral to do some babysitting for us.  So tonight she came over and met the boys, and then stayed to babysit.  She is darling and very British and I could listen to her talk all day long.  Todd and I hurried out for our first date night in London!  I was ready for one.  We decided to go on a river cruise on the Thames.  I had never been on one of these dinner cruises, so I was excited to see what all the hubbub was about.

We took the tube down to the embankment tube stop and quickly found the entrance to the Bateaux river cruises.

It was really fun to be out alone experiencing new things in London just the two of us.

Here we are...ahhhhh young love.  Okay not young anymore...just love, I guess.

Okay this is funny...we saw this building going down to the dock, and it is hard to see in this picture below, but those are American flags waving in the wind.  We were like, "Wow cool!  Is that the US embassy?!"  We were totally convinced it was!  So we googled it and...nope, that's the Savoy.  You know the hotel Hugh Grant high tails it to, to tell Julia Roberts that he loves her in Notting Hill?  Yeah that's the one.  I guess they love America and are just every so patriotic there!  Still don't get the American flags.  But it was still nice to see old glory waving to us!

The view from the little waiting area before we got on the boat.

The boat that left just before ours...with The Eye in the background.

Getting on our boat.  The sides and the top were all glass, so it was really easy to see all the sights.

Sneaking a shot of this handsome guy...

Once we were seated at our table we looked to our right and this old friend was there.  We haven't been on The Eye yet, but I am anxious to.  This is one of those iconic things about London that when I see it, I still can't believe we are really here!

Once we all got settled and ordered dinner the boat started and soon we saw Big Ben...again, seeing it will never get old!  This was the first time seeing BB all lit up at night.

There is something so magical about seeing European cities at night.  I remember seeing Rome for the first time at night, all lit up.  It is the same with London...It's so beautiful!

Our starter.  I had a grand plan to take pictures of every course, but this is the only one I remembered to take!  Which really is a good thing I guess, because I got so caught up in the moment of it all photos of food fell off my priority list!

Todd enjoying a beverage.  This is something that you have to relish every drop of here in London.  My number one complaint!!  I need a big drink people, with ice!  Oh, how I miss it.

The boat turned around and we saw Big Ben again.  There was live music on board and this fancy girl was singing "Moon River" while we passed Big Ben.  I may or may not have gotten a little misty, I'm not going to lie.  I love that song, me and Holly Golightly, and just the whole moment of it all was really magical.  I'm so cheesy like that.

Our good ol' friend the Embassy, er I mean the Savoy, again...

St. Pauls Cathedral.  So majestic.

"Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's, the little old bird woman comes..."
I'm not ashamed to say I sang that while passing...how could you not?!

Tower Bridge which is SO COOL to see in person.

Going under Tower Bridge...

The tower of London...poor Anne Boleyn.

 Canary Wharf, the financial district.
During this part of the cruise a whole bunch of business-y looking men, who we assumed were in the finance world went outside and started shooting pictures.  It was so, so odd.

It was such a fun evening and I was totally caught up in all the sights of London at night.  It was so fun and romantic, I would absolutely recommend a dinner cruise to anyone visiting London.  We had a lot of fun.  But not as much fun I don't think, as the couple sitting at the table next to us who no lie, ordered several drinks of hard liquor and also 2 bottles of champagne.  They started off the night very stiff upper lip British and by the end of the evening they were laughing away and swaying and singing along to the music.  It was the best dinner entertainment!

We decided on the tube ride home that tomorrow we will take the boys to see the Tower of London, because who doesn't want to hear tales of torture and incivility mixed with seeing a bunch of royal jewels?

Day Thirteen: Crying babies and Croissants

Friday, March 28, 2014

Today after getting Thatcher off to school and the other two T's ready for the day, I met some girls in my ward for brunch at a place on the High Street in St. John's Wood called Carluccios.  It was nice to meet some other girls in the ward and get to know them a little better.  Tagg was excited because I told him since we were going to kind of a grown up ladies thing that he could bring my iPad and play Minecraft the whole time.  He was sold.  Tate on the other hand didn't get the memo that mom needed just one hour of grown up time and pretty much just freaked out the entire time.  Why is it that after wrestling a small child for an hour plus you feel like you've just run a marathon?  Needless to say, we came home and I put Tate home and then I took a nap along with him.

Later on Tagg and I decided that we needed a treat so we went to another place on the High Street called Maison Blanc.  I had heard it was yummy, and so we went and got a french pastry each.  I got the almond croissant and Tagg got some pot o creme thing.  They were both delightful and all I know is we will be back.  Europe just has the best breads and pastries.  I don't know why we can't duplicate them in the states but we just can't.  Being here often reminds me of Italy and Malta.  The food especially.

That was all that was really exciting today.  Todd came home early again and we all had dinner as a family.  It still feels really weird to have him home and to actually sit down to dinner as a family.  I know that is sad, but it's true.

Sorry no pictures again today, just got caught up in the normality of it all I forget to take pics!

Day Ten: "Back to school, back to school..."

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Today was a big day.  Thatcher started british school, and Todd started his british case.  I guess you could say it's been an all around british day around these parts.

Thatcher woke up SUPER excited to go back to school.  He's been off since the beginning of March and has literally been chomping at the bit to get back to school. He got his father's genes with this one. I haven't felt too bad that he hasn't been to school yet because the kids will have to go until the end of July now, with a couple breaks in the next few months. Since their summer will be cut short, I felt like there was no rush getting them started. But, Thatcher would have none of that. He wanted to go!

The excitement lasted the whole morning and all our walk to school, and then when we walked in the gates and he saw all the kids running around with tons of teachers and parents, and his face went to stone. Panic.  He looked as white as a ghost and I reached out and grabbed him and pulled him in. I knew exactly how he felt. I had moved around a lot as a kid, averaging every two years. If anyone knows how it feels to be the new kid, it's me. We found the lady who had helped me get him all settled and signed up and she led us out to find his class. She introduced him to a bunch of cute girls in his class, I kinda wished she had introduced him to some boys, but oh well. They all were nice and said hi and welcome to him and then they all lined up with him at the front of the line. I side hugged him and told him that I love him and if he feels alone and scared to remember that Tagg, Tate and I are waiting for him at home and love him. He looked and me and kinda smiled, but I could see that he was deathly afraid. Oh boy. It was so hard to back away and leave him. I walked away but stood to wait and watch for him to go in. And then I took this picture because I forgot to take a before school picture of him. Poor kid.  You can see how scared he looks!

I am not going to lie when I say I am glad I had my sunglasses on because I totally started to tear up as I watched him walk into school.  We walked home and the whole time I silently prayed that he would be okay, that he would make friends, and that this wouldn't be a horrible experience for him.

The whole day I was nervous for him.  I kept hoping and praying that when I picked him up at 3:20 that he would be happy and not crying or miserable.  Again, I have been there.  I had good experiences being the new kid, and really bad ones too.  I knew it could go either way.

Tagg was so bored and lonely without Thatcher here all day. Which was super fun for me because not only did I have to entertain Tate and keep him happy, Tagg was now baby #2 for the day and so it was loads of fun! Tate has also found a new bff here in London...

Yep, himself. He spends A LOT of his time now going up to this mirror we have in our hallway and talking and laughing at himself.  It is SO funny to watch.

Finally it was time to pick Thatcher up.  We walked down to the school and as all the kids started to come out I kept looking for him and was so anxious to just see his face to read his emotions. He came out of the school and saw us and flashed me a HUGE smile. Success! He had had a good day! Yay! When he came over and I asked him how his day was he said, "GREAT!" Oh, I cannot tell you how relieved I was.

He spent the next little while telling me all about his new school and the similarities and differences between his school in Texas and Barrow Hill.  He told me that he really loves his new british school because they have more freedom there, that they have PE and Art every day, and because he made two new friends named Adam and "something that starts with an M". He also thought it was hilarious that they say "shan't and shall" here.  He also told me that math and reading are the same in the states and in england, good to know. He was buzzing around all happy and I was SO SO thrilled.

We stopped by the park on the way home and the boys played catch for a bit, and I snapped these pictures because it still boggles my mind where we are...I mean look at the backdrop!  So cool.

We headed home sooner than we had planned because even though the sun was out, it was actually freezing cold.

Todd had a great first day at work on his new case.  We thought that he would be able to get home relatively early tonight, maybe even for dinner, but he learned half way through the day he had late meetings.  They said it was very unusual and not common and so I still have a glimmer of hope that it will be different here with Todd's schedule.  That was one of the major perks about coming, Todd should be around a heck of a lot more.  The jury is still out for me if that is going to be true, since he only came home to sleep tonight.  But I still have faith and hope and all that good stuff because I am good like that. ;)  I'll update as our time here continues.

Something that is annoying is that we do not have phone or internet in our flat until April 2nd.  So we've been paying a weekly fee to this "hot spot" internet we have available through our building.  It is so spotty and goes in and out all the time and it is enough to drive you batty.  I can't wait to get our "broadband" as they call it here, installed.  Ay.

Oh, and today was the first day I missed TV. Looks like I'll have to start checking out the ol' iTunes to catch up on some favorite shows!
