One-Hundred and Seventy: "It's the most wonderful time of the year!"

Tuesday, September 2, 2014

I remember back in the the 90's there was a Staples commercial about a father pushing a shopping cart down the aisle filled with school supplies, the Christmas song "it's the most wonderful time of the year!" playing in the background.  I remember thinking it was funny as a teenager, now I don't just think it is funny, it is the HONEST truth!

I love my boys. I really, REALLY do. But being crammed into a small flat for six weeks with no yard and two big active boys day in and day out and no car was enough to DO ME IN. So today was a good day at our house. BACK TO SCHOOL!

These boys are owning Year 5 (4th grade) and Year 3 (2nd grade)...ahhhh it's so confusing!
Oh, and Thatcher is a punk.

Hello I have a grown up for a child. I cannot take him getting any bigger. Make it stop.

Tagg is now a full on boy, losing his baby chub and all.

It's going to be a wild ride for these two boys this year, but if anyone can do it they can. I am marveled every day how these two smart, compatible, talented, amazing little men came from me. I couldn't love them anymore.

After the obligatory pictures, they were off finding friends, which warmed my heart.

Day One-Hundred and Fifty-One: The days are slow, but the years go by so fast...

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

Today I was at the park and I overheard a mom say to her child after she asked for her to come push her on the swing, "Agh, no! Just play by yourself and leave mom alone!" It really hit me hard hearing this. It was kinda like a punch in my gut in a way, and I will tell you why...

First of all, it made me sad for this little girl, especially seeing her face when her mom said that. But in all honesty, it made me more sad for the mom. The mother was young, and I noticed that this was her first and only child so far, even though I did see that she was pregnant. Don't get me wrong, I also completely get it and can sympathize with this mom. I get that sometimes you just want to be left alone, and after you hear, "mom...mom...mom...mom..." all day long...it does get frustrating and even annoying. I know it does. I often go to my room after dinner and "hide" just to de-compress and not be spoken to or touched, and that is the truth, ask Todd.

I am also pretty sure I have said those exact words before to my then two young boys several years ago. I remember they would beg me to push them on the swings after we had come to the park, even though I had wished they would just play while I either chatted with friends, or cleared my head. The things is that I later ate those words, and regretted saying them. When we were struggling with infertility my whole perspective changed. I realized one day that I might not ever hold another baby of mine, or feed a baby in the middle of the night, or get to change it's poopy diapers, or clean up messes from a toddler or push them child on a swing. I remember that day very clearly. I all of a sudden regretted a lot of times I said no to wanting toddlers, or was frustrated with sticky messes and mundane daily activities. I looked back on a blur of days that I know I didn't appreciate or treasure the way that I should have. I realized I might not ever get the chance to change and enjoy raising another baby again.

Struggling with infertility, and miscarriages, and the whole lot of all that ridiculous nonsense, really changed me as a mother. It made me realize how much I fiercely love Thatcher and Taggart beyond words, and absolutely changed the way I mothered them. It made me say yes a whole lot more, and made me try to not freak out so much about the messes they made. It made me hug them a little tighter, and relax a bit more. It made me realize that they were growing up every day and I would never get these days back. That they were mine forever but they were not going to be living in my home forever and so I should enjoy them now. This is not to say changed into the perfect mom. No way Jose. I am so totally far from a perfect mom. I still get annoyed, and tired and completely 100% done. But deep inside it's different.

And when we were blessed with a new babe I honestly found absolute joy in doing those mundane tasks like changing poopy diapers, and playing for hours on the floor with baby toys, and reading books over and over and over for the millionth time. And not once in the 14 months of sleepless nights did I ever go into his room grumpy or bothered or even feeling at all disturbed. Every time I went in I grabbed him and held him so close and gave thanks to God that He somehow saw fit to give me the desire of my mother heart. I was changed, and I am so grateful for that paradigm shift in my life. God sure does work in mysterious ways.

So I somehow wanted to tell all of this to that young mom at the park, and tell her to JUST GO PUSH HER ON THE SWING LADY! But I didn't do that obviously, and I do know that we all learn different lessons at different times in our lives and at even at different paces. But you know what? I am sure grateful though for my three boys. Two who came to us easy peasy rice and cheesy, as Tagg likes to say, and one who I had to pay the piper for. All three have brought me more joy than I ever knew was even possible. And now when one of them asks me to push them on the swings, I will and I do it happily, and it is always a reminder to me that the days are slow, but the years go by so fast.

This very thought may or may not have been going through my mind when I crawled into bed with Thatcher the other night and held him and ugly cried. The best part about this story is that it didn't even phase Thatcher. He didn't say a word to me about it. He was probably just like, "yep, my mom is a wacko"...but how could I explain to him that I was picturing him all grown up with stubble on his face and a deep voice about to leave on a mission just 3 minutes before I got in his bed and tried to hold him like a newborn baby? Oh boy...I was a mess. Sweet Thatch, he's such a good understanding boy.

Also, along these same lines of me being a wacko...I love to sit in front of Tate and watch him eat breakfast...is that kinda creeper? I just can't help myself!! And I hope years from now I will always remember Tate and my breakfasts together...

Oh, and also, Tate had some very important and pressing work to catch up on today...

Day One-Hundred and Forty-Nine: Thatcher's Violin

Monday, August 11, 2014

Today we went and got Thatcher a violin! He is going to start taking lessons from my friend Sylvia who plays the violin and also teaches all her kids to play. Thatcher had been expressing interest in learning the violin for a while, and when we moved here and I became friends with Sylvia the stars aligned.

He has promised to practice, and I have promised not to become a crazy women getting him to practice. But he is very excited! And I hope that excitement lasts. Both Todd and I played the violin, emphasise on the word "played" because neither of us do now. I can't speak for Todd but I never gave it 100% and just got by with barely practicing. When I was about 13 I gave it up, which was stupid. So I hope Thatcher sticks with it now that he has expressed real desire to learn. I think he will, he is different then me, more focused and driven. He gets that from his dad.

We went to Stringers to rent his violin, which is a cute little shop pretty close to where we live. I thought this will be such a sweet little memory for Thatcher, getting his first violin in London...

Day One-Hundred-Seventeen: "Mom, do you know where black holes come from?"

Thursday, July 10, 2014

Today Thatcher didn't have school because the teachers were striking, again. It is so funny to be here and see how different things are and how they deal with problems differently than we do. So Thatcher was happy because he got a day to spend home with Tate and I. Tagg didn't mind too much that he had to go to school while Thatcher stayed home because he was going on a field trip to see a play.

This morning I took Thatcher along with us on our run through Regents Park. He was actually super excited to go running with me, which I thought was cute. We dropped Tagg off at school and headed to the park. As we crossed the street to the park I told him that as soon as we got to the other side we would start running. When I run I am not a talker, nor do I really like people chatting it up with me...so it was hilarious to see that Thatcher literally talked to me the ENTIRE run. I was answering with such short, curt responses, but that didn't stop him. He is such a funny kid. "Mom, do you know where black holes come from"...a typical topic of his conversation with me. Oh Thatcher, I love that kid.

We stopped at the playground on our way home and he and Tate played and played. I love how close these two boys are, even though they are 8 years apart. Thatcher really does adore Tate, and visa versa.

We came home and Thatcher had some friends over from our ward, and we all stayed inside out of the rain today. I forgot my umbrella when I went to go pick up Tagg at school, and got drenched on the way home. Good times.

Day One-Hundred-Two to One-Hundred-Ten: A Week goes by, and the Three T's.

Thursday, July 3, 2014

This last week has been full of Tate becoming a more and more a toddler and other such fun adventures with my three T's.

With Taters we are in full fledge mess making, getting into everything, curious and exploring stage over here! I LOVE this age when your baby starts to respond to you and understand you better and better, but it also can be hard when they are getting into EVERYTHING. But since Tate is just so cute I guess I'll let it all slide...especially since he knows how to give kisses now and has quickly learned how to butter me up with those cute toddler kisses!

Playing with my phone and taking pics of his feet...I sure do love these chubby baby feet!!

Taters Selfie...

One of Tate's favorite pastimes is cleaning. He loves to "help" me sweep and now he goes and gets the broom all by himself and I will often find him "sweeping" a room. He also loves to get his wipes and help me by "wiping" things down.

STOP GROWING UP!

And then along with all the cleaning Tate is doing around here he also makes his fair share of crazy messes, including finding markers his big bro's leave out and drawing on everything in sight. It is so lovely!

Thank heavens these were washable markers!

The flowers here are GORGEOUS. I will never get over how beautiful they are. I often stop off at the little flower shop across the street from us and make sure we have fresh flowers in the kitchen. They make me so happy.

We really do spend a lot of time at the park. How can we not with these three active little boys? On Tuesday's and Wednesday's while Thatcher is at after school activities, Tate, Tagg and I head to the park. Sometimes we stop and get a snog as well. Everyone needs a good snog now and then!

Tate making a little friend...

I also like big snogs...just fyi.

Tagg refusing to pose for "another picture...". But enjoying his Snog none the less...

Tate is afraid of this penguin trash can at the park. It is seriously so funny I can't stand it. I always tell him to go say hi to the penguin, which he will, and then he will start to make a very concerned face while backing up quickly. I can't wait to introduce him to Mickey Mouse and other such characters. I am sure it will go over really well!

After the park we went to pick up Thatcher. When we entered into the school and onto the playground I couldn't find him anywhere. To say I was freaked out for about 10 minutes is an understatement. I almost had a heart attack right on the spot! But before I did, a nice little boy told me he was in this playhouse playing none other than...Pokemon. Oh Pokemon, you and I have a hate/hate relationship!

Tagg joined in on the Pokemon fun. 8-9 year old boys are the same throughout the world I have discovered.

We feel so blessed that Thatch and Tagg have adjusted so well to our London home and their new schools. They have made friends so quickly and have some really sweet, good and kind friends, which makes a mama's heart so happy!

I snapped this pic of Tagg socializing with his classmates while waiting to go into the school...

Tate really loves our daily walks to take and pick up the boys...

Day Twenty: Mi Piace

Friday, April 4, 2014

After taking the boys to school in the morning, Tate and I came home and had a lazy day.  We played on the floor in the playroom for a little over an hour.  He is so funny and does the funniest things.  I pretty much just laugh at him all day long.  Tate is our latest walker.  Thatcher walked at before a year and Tagg was at just about a year old.  Tate is taking his sweet time.  If it's anything indicative or personality, I could agree with that analysis of the boys.  So this morning in the playroom we were practicing our walking skills.  He's getting good, he's just a little chicken.  A super cute chicken though.

Tate took a long nap and I ordered some thai food take out and spent the afternoon researching Ireland, Scotland, and the Cotswolds.  Excited for some family trips and adventures!

On the way to grab the boys from school I saw this...

An old double decker just waiting at the light.  So fun.  I still love seeing the double decker buses and telephone booths and red post boxes.  Every time I do I hear in my head, "London, baby!" by Joey.

Thatcher is learning some Italian at school.  He says he thinks that it is so easy for him to learn because his mom and dad know it and somehow passed it down to him.  I laughed pretty hard when he told me this.  I have news for him.  Any language expertise or ease of learning came solely from one parent of his. And that parent is not me.  It is really cute hearing him try to speak and say some words.  Today he learned "mi piace" which literally means, "to me, it pleases" or how the Italians say, "I like...".  He was going around saying "mi piace gelato"..."mi piace computer" etc.  It's really cute and fun for us to hear and see.

These pink blossom trees in front of our complex just keep getting more and more pink and full every day.  I love it!

Even the grey days here are pretty with all the bright, beautiful flowers blooming contrasted by all the green.  I am serious when I say I think Texas prepared me to live here.  Before moving to Texas, I hated the rain and grey days.  But after having lived in Texas with A LOT of sunny days over and over and over again, you get excited for some "weather".  I actually really like how the days here will start off sunny, then it will grey over and rain for a bit, and then the sun will come back out.  Hooray for weather!

After school we did the afternoon/night routine of homework, spelling words, dinner prep, and playing peek-a -boo with the Taters.

Tonight at dinner Thatcher was telling us all that they are learning in school about World War II.  For a field trip the other day they went to a Jewish Museum and were learning about the Jews during World War II.  We had a long talk about World War II and how it started, and how it all went down and the US and UK's part in all of it and how they were alliances etc.  The boys are at a fun age where they are very inquisitive about all of this and were asking some pretty cool questions.  Thatcher has a project coming up on Winston Churchill, which I think is totally awesome.  I mean who wouldn't want to study World War II and Winston Churchill while living in London!  Lucky duck!  Okay, maybe I am just a nerd.

Day Fourteen: "On the rooftops of London coo, what a sight!"

Saturday, March 29, 2014

After walking Thatcher to school this morning and waiting on the playground for the bell to ring I looked up and saw this...

Through the hustle of trying to get out the door and to the school on time, the above scene just made me stop and smile.  I mean, I think I saw this scene a million and a half times as a child watching Mary Poppins.  Can you not in your minds eye see Burt and his friends chim chim cher-ee-ing up on those rooftops?  It's still so, so cool to be here.

It was freezing this morning so I bundled Tate up in his fuzzy turtle bunting.  He was not amused.

And he didn't want to wait for Thatcher to go into school, he wanted out of his stroller...

And Tagg got to play on the playground equipment while we waited.  Poor kid is totally bored out of his gord being home all day without going to school.

I heard from the nice lady at Thatcher's school today that Tagg's school might not allow him to start until after the new term, which is April 28th.  When I heard this I about died and she absolutely agreed with me that Tagg should be in school now, before the break.  So she told me to "go home and have a stiff drink and call them up and give them a piece of my mind with a gruff American attitude!"  I laughed pretty hard at that one. But yeah, I'm going to have to settle this situation.  American no nonsense style I suppose.

I was lucky enough to find a nice girl in the single adult ward through a referral to do some babysitting for us.  So tonight she came over and met the boys, and then stayed to babysit.  She is darling and very British and I could listen to her talk all day long.  Todd and I hurried out for our first date night in London!  I was ready for one.  We decided to go on a river cruise on the Thames.  I had never been on one of these dinner cruises, so I was excited to see what all the hubbub was about.

We took the tube down to the embankment tube stop and quickly found the entrance to the Bateaux river cruises.

It was really fun to be out alone experiencing new things in London just the two of us.

Here we are...ahhhhh young love.  Okay not young anymore...just love, I guess.

Okay this is funny...we saw this building going down to the dock, and it is hard to see in this picture below, but those are American flags waving in the wind.  We were like, "Wow cool!  Is that the US embassy?!"  We were totally convinced it was!  So we googled it and...nope, that's the Savoy.  You know the hotel Hugh Grant high tails it to, to tell Julia Roberts that he loves her in Notting Hill?  Yeah that's the one.  I guess they love America and are just every so patriotic there!  Still don't get the American flags.  But it was still nice to see old glory waving to us!

The view from the little waiting area before we got on the boat.

The boat that left just before ours...with The Eye in the background.

Getting on our boat.  The sides and the top were all glass, so it was really easy to see all the sights.

Sneaking a shot of this handsome guy...

Once we were seated at our table we looked to our right and this old friend was there.  We haven't been on The Eye yet, but I am anxious to.  This is one of those iconic things about London that when I see it, I still can't believe we are really here!

Once we all got settled and ordered dinner the boat started and soon we saw Big Ben...again, seeing it will never get old!  This was the first time seeing BB all lit up at night.

There is something so magical about seeing European cities at night.  I remember seeing Rome for the first time at night, all lit up.  It is the same with London...It's so beautiful!

Our starter.  I had a grand plan to take pictures of every course, but this is the only one I remembered to take!  Which really is a good thing I guess, because I got so caught up in the moment of it all photos of food fell off my priority list!

Todd enjoying a beverage.  This is something that you have to relish every drop of here in London.  My number one complaint!!  I need a big drink people, with ice!  Oh, how I miss it.

The boat turned around and we saw Big Ben again.  There was live music on board and this fancy girl was singing "Moon River" while we passed Big Ben.  I may or may not have gotten a little misty, I'm not going to lie.  I love that song, me and Holly Golightly, and just the whole moment of it all was really magical.  I'm so cheesy like that.

Our good ol' friend the Embassy, er I mean the Savoy, again...

St. Pauls Cathedral.  So majestic.

"Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's, the little old bird woman comes..."
I'm not ashamed to say I sang that while passing...how could you not?!

Tower Bridge which is SO COOL to see in person.

Going under Tower Bridge...

The tower of London...poor Anne Boleyn.

 Canary Wharf, the financial district.
During this part of the cruise a whole bunch of business-y looking men, who we assumed were in the finance world went outside and started shooting pictures.  It was so, so odd.

It was such a fun evening and I was totally caught up in all the sights of London at night.  It was so fun and romantic, I would absolutely recommend a dinner cruise to anyone visiting London.  We had a lot of fun.  But not as much fun I don't think, as the couple sitting at the table next to us who no lie, ordered several drinks of hard liquor and also 2 bottles of champagne.  They started off the night very stiff upper lip British and by the end of the evening they were laughing away and swaying and singing along to the music.  It was the best dinner entertainment!

We decided on the tube ride home that tomorrow we will take the boys to see the Tower of London, because who doesn't want to hear tales of torture and incivility mixed with seeing a bunch of royal jewels?
