Day Thirteen: Crying babies and Croissants

Friday, March 28, 2014

Today after getting Thatcher off to school and the other two T's ready for the day, I met some girls in my ward for brunch at a place on the High Street in St. John's Wood called Carluccios.  It was nice to meet some other girls in the ward and get to know them a little better.  Tagg was excited because I told him since we were going to kind of a grown up ladies thing that he could bring my iPad and play Minecraft the whole time.  He was sold.  Tate on the other hand didn't get the memo that mom needed just one hour of grown up time and pretty much just freaked out the entire time.  Why is it that after wrestling a small child for an hour plus you feel like you've just run a marathon?  Needless to say, we came home and I put Tate home and then I took a nap along with him.

Later on Tagg and I decided that we needed a treat so we went to another place on the High Street called Maison Blanc.  I had heard it was yummy, and so we went and got a french pastry each.  I got the almond croissant and Tagg got some pot o creme thing.  They were both delightful and all I know is we will be back.  Europe just has the best breads and pastries.  I don't know why we can't duplicate them in the states but we just can't.  Being here often reminds me of Italy and Malta.  The food especially.

That was all that was really exciting today.  Todd came home early again and we all had dinner as a family.  It still feels really weird to have him home and to actually sit down to dinner as a family.  I know that is sad, but it's true.

Sorry no pictures again today, just got caught up in the normality of it all I forget to take pics!

Day Twelve: "They have pears in England too?!?"

Thursday, March 27, 2014

Not much to blog about today.  No pictures from today, sad but true.  Just still getting in our normal day to day routine.  Thatcher was out of school today because the teachers were striking.  I don't know a lot about the situation, but it all sounds very formal and British.  This morning as I was making breakfast Tagg saw that I had put some pears in the fruit bowl on the kitchen table and exclaimed, "they have pears in England TOO?!"  It is so funny to see and hear what the kids think about London.  They ask me funny questions all the time and have started trying to mimic the accent.

We stayed home all morning and just hung out, I cleaned the flat and then we got ready and went to the cell phone place to upgrade my phone from pay by month to a contract.  It was pouring rain, and the boys were mortified that we were going to actually go out in it.  I was the meanest mom ever and they didn't want take the bus, they wanted to take the tube.  There was a lot of sadness, weeping, wailing, nashing...all of that.  But we made it there, upgraded my phone, which I am SO GRATEFUL for.  They wouldn't let me do a contract when we first got here because I didn't have my UK debit card yet.  It was such a pain, not enough data, wouldn't let me set up voice mail, couldn't text.  It was a royal pain.  But now I am back in action!

After getting my "mobile" all set up we headed to Selfridges because it is my new favorite store and the boys somehow talked me into getting them a new Lego set.  We looked around for a little while then caught the bus back to St. John's Wood.

Tate was done with our outing for the day and cried and screamed the whole way home.  Everyone was looking at me again and I really had had enough of the rain, the complaining, the screaming, the riding the bus and wanted to scream "What do you want me to do about it!?!"  But I didn't.  I kept my cool.  I missed my Sienna though.  And sunny Texas.  And my friends.  And for some reason Mexican food at that moment. Random, but true.  Today was the first day I got a little sad and homesick.

Tonight Todd got home for the second night in the row at a very decent hour.  Shocking, but true.  It is weird, it's like, "wait...who is this guy hanging around during the evenings?  I am married!?  What?!"  It's been really nice, and also kinda weird and we are still adjusting.  Usually when Todd is home it is play time. I relax, he relaxes, the kids want him to play with them.  So it is weird having him around at night and things still need to get done, I am still in rush around mommy mode with dinner, and dishes, and lunches for tomorrow being made.  So yeah.  It will take some adjusting, but it's good adjusting.

We did the usual of fighting the boys to eat dinner, and then getting them to bed.  Tonight I continued planned our trip to Paris that we are taking over Easter.  I am very excited.  We are also planning a trip to Ireland and Scotland after the boys get out of school.  Places I've always wanted to go, and it is exciting we will be able to go and learn and see all that we can.  Still feel so blessed for this opportunity.

Day Eleven: First rainy day...

Wednesday, March 26, 2014

Today was a pretty uneventful, rainy day.  We got to wear all our rain-gear for the first time today as it was raining pretty hard when it was time to walk Thatcher to school. Having lived in Texas for 4 years, it's been a LONG time since I have had to bundle kids up to go outside. I need to better budget in time for it all, we were running a bit late to school, but he got there just on time.

We had some friends over in the morning which was nice to sit and chat and let the kids play.  Tagg played the computer for his allotted 1 hour, and then begged me for the rest of the 10 hours he was awake if he could have more time. He then got distracted from the computer by going in his room and playing with Legos.  I put Tate down for a nap at around 1:00 and seriously didn't hear a peep out of Tagg until almost 3:00.  He has been loving Legos lately, which I am happy about.

After we were home from getting Thatcher I took Tate out of the stroller and he did this...

He LOVES this new bunting thing that we got for him to help him stay warm while he is in the stroller.  It is soft and fuzzy and whenever I take him out of the stroller when he has it on, he immediately lays on the floor and scoots around.  He is a weirdo!  But a cute weirdo and kinda looks like a cute turtle with this hood on!

He also is banned from the kitchen because the washer and the dishwasher are running a lot and he loves to push all the buttons and mess up the cycles and then we have to start them all over.  It's funny, but not funny.  But whenever I am in here he crawls as fast as his little arms and legs let him to me and then proceeds to empty out all the cabinets and push all the buttons he wants.  Good thing the kitchen has a door!  Need to look into getting some locks for the cabinets!

So yeah it was a good, uneventful rainy day.  Thatcher is home tomorrow because the teachers are "striking" at the school around here, whatever that means.  And so I need to find something for us all to do so we are not stuck in the flat all day.

Day Ten: "Back to school, back to school..."

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Today was a big day.  Thatcher started british school, and Todd started his british case.  I guess you could say it's been an all around british day around these parts.

Thatcher woke up SUPER excited to go back to school.  He's been off since the beginning of March and has literally been chomping at the bit to get back to school. He got his father's genes with this one. I haven't felt too bad that he hasn't been to school yet because the kids will have to go until the end of July now, with a couple breaks in the next few months. Since their summer will be cut short, I felt like there was no rush getting them started. But, Thatcher would have none of that. He wanted to go!

The excitement lasted the whole morning and all our walk to school, and then when we walked in the gates and he saw all the kids running around with tons of teachers and parents, and his face went to stone. Panic.  He looked as white as a ghost and I reached out and grabbed him and pulled him in. I knew exactly how he felt. I had moved around a lot as a kid, averaging every two years. If anyone knows how it feels to be the new kid, it's me. We found the lady who had helped me get him all settled and signed up and she led us out to find his class. She introduced him to a bunch of cute girls in his class, I kinda wished she had introduced him to some boys, but oh well. They all were nice and said hi and welcome to him and then they all lined up with him at the front of the line. I side hugged him and told him that I love him and if he feels alone and scared to remember that Tagg, Tate and I are waiting for him at home and love him. He looked and me and kinda smiled, but I could see that he was deathly afraid. Oh boy. It was so hard to back away and leave him. I walked away but stood to wait and watch for him to go in. And then I took this picture because I forgot to take a before school picture of him. Poor kid.  You can see how scared he looks!

I am not going to lie when I say I am glad I had my sunglasses on because I totally started to tear up as I watched him walk into school.  We walked home and the whole time I silently prayed that he would be okay, that he would make friends, and that this wouldn't be a horrible experience for him.

The whole day I was nervous for him.  I kept hoping and praying that when I picked him up at 3:20 that he would be happy and not crying or miserable.  Again, I have been there.  I had good experiences being the new kid, and really bad ones too.  I knew it could go either way.

Tagg was so bored and lonely without Thatcher here all day. Which was super fun for me because not only did I have to entertain Tate and keep him happy, Tagg was now baby #2 for the day and so it was loads of fun! Tate has also found a new bff here in London...

Yep, himself. He spends A LOT of his time now going up to this mirror we have in our hallway and talking and laughing at himself.  It is SO funny to watch.

Finally it was time to pick Thatcher up.  We walked down to the school and as all the kids started to come out I kept looking for him and was so anxious to just see his face to read his emotions. He came out of the school and saw us and flashed me a HUGE smile. Success! He had had a good day! Yay! When he came over and I asked him how his day was he said, "GREAT!" Oh, I cannot tell you how relieved I was.

He spent the next little while telling me all about his new school and the similarities and differences between his school in Texas and Barrow Hill.  He told me that he really loves his new british school because they have more freedom there, that they have PE and Art every day, and because he made two new friends named Adam and "something that starts with an M". He also thought it was hilarious that they say "shan't and shall" here.  He also told me that math and reading are the same in the states and in england, good to know. He was buzzing around all happy and I was SO SO thrilled.

We stopped by the park on the way home and the boys played catch for a bit, and I snapped these pictures because it still boggles my mind where we are...I mean look at the backdrop!  So cool.

We headed home sooner than we had planned because even though the sun was out, it was actually freezing cold.

Todd had a great first day at work on his new case.  We thought that he would be able to get home relatively early tonight, maybe even for dinner, but he learned half way through the day he had late meetings.  They said it was very unusual and not common and so I still have a glimmer of hope that it will be different here with Todd's schedule.  That was one of the major perks about coming, Todd should be around a heck of a lot more.  The jury is still out for me if that is going to be true, since he only came home to sleep tonight.  But I still have faith and hope and all that good stuff because I am good like that. ;)  I'll update as our time here continues.

Something that is annoying is that we do not have phone or internet in our flat until April 2nd.  So we've been paying a weekly fee to this "hot spot" internet we have available through our building.  It is so spotty and goes in and out all the time and it is enough to drive you batty.  I can't wait to get our "broadband" as they call it here, installed.  Ay.

Oh, and today was the first day I missed TV. Looks like I'll have to start checking out the ol' iTunes to catch up on some favorite shows!

Day Nine: Our 9th day here, and Thatcher's 9th Birthday!

Monday, March 24, 2014

It seems like just yesterday I was baking a Wall-E cake for Thatcher's 4th birthday while we were in Kentucky for Todd's internship with Amazon.com.  Now today I woke up and decorated our flat for Thatcher's 9th birthday.  Ayyyyy!  I am not kidding when I say I feel like I blinked and saw him grow before my eyes.  Time is going by so fast, I try to remind myself as I get caught up in the day to day busy, that these boys are not going to be living in my home forever and I need to cherish each day with them.  Even when they are driving me up the wall into crazytown with their whining and fighting.

Thatcher has grown into such a sweet young man, with a big tender heart and a real love for life.  He is like our little sponge, soaking up all that he can from learning and life.  He now talks to me and teaches me about things he has learned, especially anything to do with science.  He has always been wise beyond his years, and he is also so thoughtful and caring.  He wants to be good and do good and he is the perfect oldest child and big brother to Tagg and Tate.  We couldn't love these handsome boy anymore. I don't know what I did right to be chosen to be his mom, but I am so grateful I am!

Here is the big birthday boy at church in his white shirt and tie, little missionary in the making.  Do not even get me started on that.  I've had him for 9 years, and get him for 9 years more, and then I send him off for the Lord to have him for 2 years of service.  Ay.  Cannot even think of it without tearing up.

We got to go to our new ward today, the Hyde Park 2nd Ward.  We got a taxi to pick the 5 of us up because getting out the door on Sunday mornings is hard enough without having to worry about a 45 minute tube or bus ride.  It was the greatest idea ever as we were at church in 15 minutes.  Pretty sure that will be a weekly tradition.

The building is located on exhibition road, which is the road with all the museums on it in London.
It was so great to see this building in the midst of the city.

In the front part of the church is a visitors center  they revamped for the Olympics.  It is really nice with a big Christus and displays on church history in England.
I loved seeing the cute missionaries that staff it.

The boys by the Christus.

The ward was so great.  We are so happy to be here and be apart of this ward.  It is a great mix of nationalities, with a lot of Americans.  There was such a special spirit there, and me loving church history I couldn't help but get a little choked up thinking about all the amazing people in the church who either served their missions here or came from here and impacted our history and lives so much.

We all felt instantly welcomed and the boys were happy to make some friends.  The primary is considerably smaller here than our Frisco ward and Thatcher was very excited to be able to participate more.  I think we will really enjoy our time here.

We took the tube home which was long and I don't know if we will do again, we just might taxi it up both ways from now on.  By the time we got home and I started to make Thatcher's birthday dinner and cake, it was way past 3:00pm.

Here's the gang ready to eat for Thatcher's choice of dinner for his birthday...

He requested mexican food.  Mexican food in London?! Ummm this isn't Texas anymore!  He loves these creamy chicken taquitos from OBB.  They are REALLY good, and I was eager to take on the challenge of finding the ingredients here.  I will say it wasn't TOO hard, except this jar of salsa that you see below, I ordered online and thought it was a BIG jar.  Nope.  I paid about 7 bucks for this sucker.

The 9 year old of the house...

...and the baby, Tate's been charming everyone he meets.

The presents and a little peek of our flat.  (More pics to come soon!  Promise!  Just finishing some stuff...) I put together this collage wall on Saturday.

Getting ready to open gifts...he's such a big kid!  I know I keep saying it, but I can't handle how grown up he is getting!!

Thatcher trying to keep Tate from throwing the presents, because that is what he was trying to do.

Since the boys are so close in age, Tagg get's just as excited for Thatcher's gifts because he knows he'll be playing with them too...punk.

I love this shot.  My three sons.

Thatcher is such a cute gift receiver.  He acts so happy and thankful for each gift.

Thatcher requested red velvet cake.  Red velvet cake and mexican food.  Yeah I think you could say he's pretty much a true southern boy.

Okay before you knock this cake, because it looks awful, it's the best tasting thing in the world.  Promise. Try it, you'll love it.  The recipe is from Ree, she's the best.  This icing didn't set up well because I'm here in London and things are a little different here.  I need to tweak it a bit.

Classic blowing out the candles puffy cheek shot...
d

All in all it was a great Sunday and birthday for Thatcher.  Tomorrow is a BIG day with Todd's first day on his new case and Thatcher's first day of school.  He is excited and I am nervous for him.  We will see how it goes!

Day Eight: "It's always tea time..."

Sunday, March 23, 2014

Today I was invited to High Tea with some girls from our new ward.  It was at this fancy place called Fortnum & Mason.  I met my new friend Jen at the tube stop and we took the tube downtown to Fortnum & Masons.  It is a big department store and on the top floor they have this restaurant where they serve tea.  Jen said that you have to reserve this place 6 weeks out.  It was very posh, as the brits say, and really fun to have the whole experience of "high tea".  It was also fun to meet some more ladies from our new ward and get to know them better.

This is the lobby area as you wait to be seated.  One American lady come up and asked if she could just have tea for one and the guy behind the counter told her they had absolutely no room.  Well then!

A piano player playing songs...

The main dining room and seating area...

I ordered the herbal peppermint tea and honestly my expectations were pretty low because I've never really cared for herbal teas.  This tea was actually very delicious and I could totally get used to drinking like that tea on cold mornings.

Pretty centerpieces...

My tea...I loved all the pretty tiffany blue dishes and tea pots!

My friend Jen.

After you order a "hot dish"(I had eggs benedict) they then bring you all the fancy cookies and cakes on these tiered plates.  They also had these scones where you put clotted cream, lemon preserve and raspberry jam on them.  They were absolutely delicious and my favorite thing from the whole tea.  I could get used to this british tradition!

Here is the clotted cream, raspberry jam and lemon curd.  So yummy!

Pretty cakes and scones.

Some of these cakes and cookies look prettier than they taste...

Some of the displays of teas and jams and preserves you could purchase.  I think I'll have to head back and grab some some day soon.

Tea sets on display.  I will now be on the hunt for tea pots and cups and saucers so I can have a tea set  to take back to the states with us.

After I got home we just hung around the flat and I made my first big dinner here, spaghetti.  They have the same products that we used to use in Italy to make our red sauce and the spaghetti itself here is much more authentic, so the whole meal turned out pretty close to what we used to have in Italy.  The fresh bread here is also delicious, and so easy to get at the bakery just down the street from our flat. Even the bread that comes in the packages is much fresher and cut thicker, and seems to be less processed here. We've noticed that most food seem less processed and fresher.

We spent the evening skyping with my family and preparing for Sunday by getting everything ready to go to church, since we need to be out the door early to make it on time.  We are excited to go to our new ward tomorrow and the boys are very excited to make some new friends, I guess they are getting sick of just playing with each other!
